Ingredients
- 1 ready-made puff pastry roll
- 100 g of dark chocolate preferably high cocoa content
- 100 g of cold butter
- 1 egg for brushing
- Icing sugar for dusting optional
Instructions
- Step 1: Preparing the Ingredients
- Start by preparing the necessary ingredients. Take the puff pastry out of the fridge and leave it at room temperature for about 10-15 minutes to make it easier to work with.
- Cut the cold butter into thin slices and set aside.
- Break the dark chocolate into evenly sized pieces and keep it aside.
- Step 2: Creating the Pain au Chocolat
- Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface to form a rectangle.
- Spread the cold butter slices evenly over the bottom half of the puff pastry.
- Fold the upper half of the puff pastry over the butter, then seal the edges by pressing with your fingers to seal well.
- After sealing, turn the puff pastry over so that the fold is on the left.
- Roll out the puff pastry into a long, thin rectangle, then fold the bottom third up and the top third down, overlapping them slightly.
- Cover the puff pastry with a damp cloth and put it in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to chill and let the butter rest.
- Step 3: Assembly and Baking
- After the resting period, take the puff pastry out of the refrigerator and roll it out again into a rectangle.
- Cut the puff pastry into smaller rectangles, about 10x15 cm.
- Place a piece of dark chocolate on one end of each puff pastry rectangle.
- Roll the puff pastry over the chocolate to form the Pain au Chocolat, sealing the edges well.
- Transfer the sweets onto a baking tray lined with baking paper and brush the surface with beaten egg.
- Bake the Pain au Chocolat in a preheated oven at 200°C for about 15-20 minutes, or until golden and puffy.
- Once baked, take the cakes out of the oven and allow them to cool slightly before serving. Optionally, dust with icing sugar before serving.
